Charles, Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach, was Queen’s Caroline’s nephew; he inherited from his father in 1723 and married the daughter of Frederick William I of Prussia in 1729. His love of hunting earned him the nickname the ‘Wild Margrave’.
This is one of a pair of full-length portraits of husband and wife (RCIN 406794-5), identically framed. The Margravine appears with an infant, either her firstborn Charles (1733-7) or her longer-lived second son, Alexander (1736-1806). This dates the pair to c. 1734 or 1737.
The Margrave appears full-length, standing on a terrace with a flight of steps to the right, facing half to the right, resting his right hand on a table, his left arm outstretched; wearing armour with a ribbon and star of an Order and a blue mantle; a dog at his feet.Provenance
First recorded as one of a pair in the King's Gallery at Kensington Palace in 1790 (nos 7 & 18); still hanging here in 1818 (nos 316 & 327)
