Sir Joshua Reynolds painted a pair of full-length portraits of the enthroned King and Queen to be shown at the first Royal Academy exhibition to take place at Somerset House in 1780; the originals are still at the Royal Academy. This is a copy of the King's portrait, showing him seated in the Coronation chair, facing to the right, his head turned to the left, holding the Sceptre in his right hand. He wears the wearing robes of State, while St Edward's Crown rests on a cushion to left.
