Andrew MacCallum (1821-1902)
The Ballochbuie Forest Signed and dated 1876
-
This is a companion painting to another view of the forest by the same artist (RCIN 401361) and may at one time have been in the collection of Princess Beatrice, Queen Victoria’s daughter. Queen Victoria loved the Ballochbuie Forest and had added it to the Balmoral estate in Scotland to save it from being chopped down. In 1848 she recorded that she had walked ‘up a beautiful path winding through the trees and heather in Balloch Buie’. This view looks along the road that runs between Balmoral and Garbh Alt Shiel. MacCallum had visited Balmoral in 1875. Signed and dated: A Mac Callum 1876. On the stretcher for the canvas is a label stating that the picture was painted by command.
