A River Landscape c.1830-73
Oil on panel | 16.6 x 21.2 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 406731

This small landscape was first recorded at Osborne House in 1876. It probably dates from the mid-nineteenth century and depicts a wooden bridge crossing a river with a drover on horseback leading cattle down a country lane. On the left bank travellers and horses stand near a tavern; beyond is an extensive landscape with a view towards a windmill and a town. Elements of the scene recall paintings by 17th century Dutch artist Philips Wouwerman who often depicted travellers and soldiers on the move against dusky or cloud-filled skies.
The frame bears the label of E.F Watson, of 201 Piccadilly, London. The picture dealer, picture restorer, artist and carver and gilder Edward Watson was active at this address from 1838-1877.Provenance
Probably acquired by Queen Victoria; first recorded at Osborne House in 1876
