Portrait of an Unknown Baby c.1860-70
-
A baby, at half-length, lying in a cot, dressed in a white lace dress with blue lace curtains drawn apart above it and covered in a blue silk coverlet.
It has been suggested that this might be a portrait of Princess Louise (1867-1931), the third child and eldest daughter of the Prince and Princess of Wales, later King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra by Louis-William Desanges (1822-87). Desanges painted her again when she was eight or nine years old (see RCIN 406694). From 1851 onwards the artist experienced success with portraits of aristocrats' children and ladies. For example, the Bowes Museum hold an unsigned portrait attributed to Desanges of Josephine Bowes, c. 1852-60, similarly painted to be framed as an oval.Provenance
