A label on the reverse of this painting identifies the sitter as 'Madame de Montespan' (1640-1707). Françoise Athénaïs de Rochechouart de Mortemart, marquise de Montespan was the official mistress (maîtresse-en-titre) of Louis XIV from 1667 until 1677, when she fell from favour, though she was not exiled from court until 1690.
Half-length within a painted oval, facing very slightly to the right, her head turned half to the left; wearing a dress with a blue bodice, yellow sleeves, white silk gauze about neck and lower sleeves; pearls about her neck.
