This is a modern copy after Madonna of the Magnificat, painted by Sandro Botticelli in c.1483 (Uffizi Galleries, Florence). The Virgin Mary is crowned by two of five angels as she writes the first words of the canticle “Magnificat anima mea Dominum” (My soul doth magnify the Lord). The Virgin is guided by Jesus, and they both touch a Pomegranate, commonly included in fiteenth century devotional paintings to symbolise Christ's Passion.
Angelo Mambriani worked in Florence and painted several copies of well-known Italian Renaissance paintings from the collections of Palazzo Pitti and the Uffizi Galleries by Botticelli, Andrea del Sarto, Parmigianino and Titian amongst others.Provenance
Presented to Queen Elizabeth II by Professor Angelo Mambriani during State Visit to Florence, Italy in 1961
