Princess Clémentine was the daughter of King Louis-Philippe of France. In 1843 she married Prince Augustus of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. Queen Victoria described her as 'a dear, clever, affectionate, open & rightminded & sensible person'. In 1848 she came to England when her family fled from France.
Inscribed on the back with the name of the sitter and as copied in 1853 by Corden from a portrait painted by Winterhalter in 1838.Provenance
Painted for Queen Victoria; recorded in the Queen's Dressing Room at Buckingham Palace in 1876
