Hubertus van Hove (1814-65)
Interior of a Goldsmith's Workshop c. 1845-65
-
Hubertus or Huib van Hove (1814-65) studied painting with his father Bartholomeus, and with Hendrik van de Sande Bakhuyzen. In his father's studio, he worked with Johannes Bosboom on the pieces of scenery that Bartholomeus created for the Royal Theatre in The Hague. Although Hubertus started out as a landscape painter, his best works were doorkijkjes, or domestic vistas, in the style of Pieter de Hooch, in which he could make optimum use of his love of color and bright light. These views of outdoor light from a courtyard, seen through the intervening space of a room or kitchen exemplify Van Hove's leaning towards the use of a more fresh and intense colouring than was common in his day.
An interior of a Continental goldsmith's workshop; the Master craftsman stands behind a table of objects, holding out a chalice to a pair of wealthy clients; a maid stands before a door to a courtyard.Provenance
