This is a copy by George Koberwein based on Winterhalter’s portrait of Prince Albert (RCIN 405130) painted in 1859. Here, however, the Prince wears Windsor uniform. Prince Albert had died in December 1861. Records show that Koberwein was paid for a number of copies of the original portrait between 1862 and 1866. Some were for Prince Albert’s sons – one was marked as a present for Prince Arthur, another for Prince Leopold. Inscribed on the back: Copied by G.F. Kob [ ] / given to H.R.H. Prince [ ].
