Description

An early copy from the three-quarter length version painted by Van Dyck in Antwerp c.1626-7, which now hangs in the Musée Royal des Beaux-Arts, Antwerp. The sitter was bishop of Antwerp from 1611 until his death.

Purchased by George III with the collection of Consul Smith in 1762 (Flemish and Dutch list no 22); recorded in the Queen's Closet at Windsor Castle in 1792 and the King's Dressing Room by 1813
