Little is known of the artist William Oliver, who exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1867 to 1897. Many of the paintings exhibited had rather sentimental titles and were presumably on the theme of love or lost love.
This painting depicts a young fisherwoman, at three-quarter-length, seated on a wall at the sea's edge. She is reading a letter, which she holds in her right hand; in her left she holds a fishing net and mending equipment.Provenance
Presented by Mr and Mrs E. Johnson as a wedding present to the Duke and Duchess of York, 6 July 1893
