Adriaen van Diest (c.1655-1704)
Landscape with figures c. 1690
-
Van Diest was a Dutch artist from The Hague who came to England in 1678 and created landscapes, presumably to fit into interior decorative schemes. This landscape was recorded with an attribution to ‘Vandist’ in the Great Bedchamber at Kensington during the reign of Queen Anne. It presumably hung over a door or as part of the panelling. A broad river landscape includes a waterfall in the foreground, beside which three fishermen are drawing in their nets; steep wooded banks appear on the left and, in the distance, a ruined castle.
Provenance
Possibly the Van Diest landscape over the door in the Great Bedchamber at Kensington Palace in 1710 (no 108); certainly in the Bath Room at Buckingham Palace in 1819 (no 783); in the Private Dining Room at Hampton Court in 1861 (no 750)
