Princess Anne was the daughter of George II; in 1734 she married William IV, Prince of Orange. The sitter in this portrait must be in mid to late teens, so if the identification is correct the portrait dates from c. 1725-30. The sitter is shown half-length, facing the spectator, her head turned slightly to the right, wearing a lavender dress trimmed with lace and decorated with a blue and silver ribbon at the right elbow over which is an ermine-lined red mantle; she is carrying a fan.
Part of set of 5 paintings of similar dimensions, possibly by two hands, recorded in the Store at Carlton House in 1816 (nos 351-5). This included portraits of Anne’s future sister-in-law, Augusta (later Princess of Wales) and three of her siblings, Fredericka, Johann August and Christian Wilhelm of Saxe-Gotha (RCINs 404499, 404500, 406407, 404497, 406408).Provenance
Probably acquired by George IV, recorded without attribution or identification in the Store at Carlton House in 1816 (no 352) and 1819 (no 455, valued at 1 guinea)
