This portrait is traditionally identified as Frederick III of Saxe-Gotha, the eldest son of Frederick II of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg and Magdalena Augusta, Princess of Anhalt-Zerbst. In 1729 he married Luise Dorothea of Saxe-Meiningen. He is depicted wearing armour with an ermine-lined red mantle draped around him; the whole within a painted oval.
A more flattering portrait of Frederick III by Christian Schilbach, dated 1720, is recorded in Friedenstein Palace, Gotha which was the main residence of the Dukes of Saxe-Gotha.Provenance
