Three portraits in the Royal Collection are identified as Frederick II, Duke of Saxe Coburg-Altenburg (RCINs 406404, 406401, 406364). He was born in Gotha, the son of Frederick I of Saxe-Coburg and Magdalena of Saxe-Weissenfels. His youngest daughter, Augusta, married Frederick Prince of Wales in 1736.
The head may be derived from a portrait by Christian Schilbach. The sitter is depicted wearing armour, with an ermine-lined mantle draped over his right shoulder and with the riband and star of the of the Order of the Elephant; in a painted oval.Provenance
