In his autobiographical notes the Swiss painter Jakob Joseph Zelger (1812-85) wrote that Queen Victoria commissioned six oils and two watercolours from him, to commemorate her 1868 stay at Pension Wallis on the Gütsch. Apparently one of the watercolours was of the Pension, and one of the oils was of Rothenburg, a village that particularly appealed to her. These were delivered to the Queen in December 1869, although one of them (unspecified) was returned to the artist. Three of the oil paintings of views from the Pilatus survive at Osborne (RCIN 403707, 403721, 406309), where they were recorded in the catalogue of 1876. The watercolours have not been traced.
This is a view of mountainous terrain in Switzerland from the summit of the Pilatus; in the middle distance is a small lake at the base of a rocky slope cast into deep shadow; beyond this the mountains are bathed in bright sunlight.Provenance
