A view, from the east, of the Bergstrasse, the ancient road skirting the Western slopes of the Odenwald between Darmstadt and Heidelberg. In the distance are the heights of Frankenstein and the Melibokus. Two figures are pictured by the fire in the foreground.
The landscape painter August Becker was introduced to the Royal Family through his brother, Dr Ernest Becker, who had been Librarian to the Prince Consort and then Treasurer and Private Secretary to Princess Alice, Grand Duchess of Hesse. Signed and dated 1866, this is one of a number of works which Queen Victoria commissioned from Becker between 1864 and 1877. The picture arrived at Osborne by 7 January 1867 and the Queen was fully satisfied with it. Becker was paid £50 for it through his bank in Düsseldorf.Provenance
