In a snow-covered landscape, a hunting party congregates around the figure of the sixteen-year-old Prince Albert, seen beckoning his dog Eos to deliver to him the hare she carries between her jaws. The prince’s father – Ernest I, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1784-1844) – is seen at the centre of the group wearing a light coloured high-crowned hat and carrying a walking stick; the Duke’s eldest son, Ernest, appears dressed in the same fashion as his younger brother and is depicted in the process of re-loading his shotgun. The remainder of the assorted huntsmen consist of court and hunt officials, gamekeepers and Prince Albert’s cousins, Prince Ernest of Wurtemberg and the princes Ferdinand and Augustus of Saxe-Coburg. This painting is a copy of a picture by Max Praetorius, the brother of Dr. Praetorius, Prince Albert’s librarian and German Secretary.
