This painting was presented to Queen Victoria by the officers of the Royal Yacht Victoria and Albert, and was painted on board H.M.S. Majestic, Flagship Channel Squadron, on 1 July 1897. Queen Victoria was on board the yacht on her first visit to Scotland on 31 August 1842. She was off the coast of Berwick near St Abb's head when a light breeze enabled the Royal George to set sail – the only occasion on the whole trip. A piper played on board one of the boats that came to greet the Queen and she commented on the beauty of the evening. Some of the escorting vessels can be seen behind the yacht – Salamander, Shearwater and S.S. Trident.
