In his autobiography Cooper recorded that he gave 'a study in oils of Carisbrooke Castle … which I had made in 1837 – the year in which she came to the throne – on account of which I thought it might be acceptable to her Majesty'. The artist has made the architectural features narrower than they actually are. The gateway is now surmounted by a pediment and the bridge has been restored.
Signed and dated: T. S. Cooper / 1837.Provenance
