This is inscribed on the back as copied by Koberwein after an original by Bauerle. The original portrait of Arthur is also in the Royal Collection (RCIN 406639). Arthur is shown in the uniform of the Rifle Brigade with the ribbon and star of the Garter. The seventh child and third son of Queen Victoria, Arthur was reportedly the Queen's favourite, and would have been aged 29 when the original was painted. This is probably the copy which was formerly hanging in the Dining-Room at Sandringham.
