Danckerts was a landscape painter born and trained in The Hague who had visited Italy before settling in England during the 1660s and 70s. Records show Danckerts receiving payments from the King in the 1675 and 1679, while the inventories of Charles II and James II include landscapes by him; this is a rare example of a figure painting recorded in an early inventory and attributed to him.
The landscape here certainly resembles Danckerts's work; there is nothing by him with which to compare the figures. They have a look of Dutch figure painting of this period, with a slight suggestion of Peter Lely, an artist with whom Danckerts was certainly acquainted. It has been suggested that the figures here are by Hendrick Danckerts's brother Johann (1615-81).Provenance
First recorded in the Eating Room at Windsor Castle in 1710 (no 27), where it remained at least until 1792;
