Portrait of a Man called George Fermor (1561-1612) 1601?
Oil on panel | 57.4 x 51.0 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 406184

The sitter is shown wearing a dark doublet and wide linen ruff set into figure-of-eight pleats. Based on the family crest in the upper left corner the subject is believed to be Sir George Fermor of Easton Neston who served under the Prince of Orange in the Netherlands and was knighted by the Earl of Leicester in 1586. It is unlikely however that this painting, in which the sitter's age is given as 40 could have been painted as late as 1601, and the sitter may be an older member of the Fermor family.
Provenance
Possibly one of a group of group of historical portraits acquired in 1731 with the lease of Kew House from Lady Elizabeth Capel by Frederick, Prince of Wales; certainly recorded in the Queen's Gallery at Hampton Court in 1861 (no 271)
