A poor varient of a painting in the Rijksmuseum attributed to Jan Anthonisz. van Ravesteyn. The second son of William the Silent, Maurice of Nassau took over as effective ruler of the Dutch revolt after his father's murder in 1584 - he was a successful commander of the armed forces and Stadtholder. He inherited the title, Prince of Orange, upon the death of his elder half brother Philip William in 1618. He is shown here wearing parcel-gilt armour with a lace ruff and a gold embroidered red sash across his right shoulder.
