This is a fairly early copy of the portrait in the Gemäldegalerie in Dresden which was painted c.1630 during Van Dyck’s second Flemish period.
Englebert Taie (also known as Taye) came from an old Brabantine family. He served as burgomaster of Brussels in 1620, 1626 and 1627 and was also a member of the council of Brabant. The sitter wears a deep ruff starched into pleats and black doublet with a jewelled chain across his right shoulder.Provenance
Acquired by George III with the collection of Consul Smith in 1762 (Dutch and Flemish List, no 14); recorded in the Queen's Dressing Room at Kensington Palace in 1790 and 1818 (no 252)
