Head of a Youth c.1690-1730
Oil on canvas | 68.1 x 50.6 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 406131
-
The figure is shown with shoulders facing slightly to the left and his head turned half to the right. A red drape is fastened across his shoulders with a fur strap. The head and shoulders may have been intended for a David or St John the Baptist, and is possibly a companion to Head of a Sibyl (RCIN 406130). Both works seem too feeble to be by Cignani himself.
Provenance
This and RCIN 406130 possibly the 'Two Heads...by Carlo Cignani' acquired in Rome for George III by Richard Dalton; probably the paintings recorded in the Gallery at Windsor Castle in 1792 and certainly there in the Queen's Private Waiting Room in 1813
