The Madonna del Sacco 1600-99
-
The Virgin sits on marble steps to the right of centre. In her arms the semi-clad Christ Child is shown holding out his arms to the male on the left, who is seen in profile, resting his right arm on a bolster whilst reading from a book on his legs.
This is a copy, painted on coarse canvas, of the lunette-shaped fresco in the cloister of SS. Annunziata, Florence, dated 1525. The fresco of the Madonna del Sacco was one of Andrea's most celebrated public works. This copy was probably made in the seventeenth century and there is no reason why it should not be Florentine.Provenance
