The Healing of Tobit c.1570-1610

The Old Testament story of Tobit (Tobit VI: 1-4) is often depicted in in Old Master paintings. Tobit's son, Tobias, goes on a journey, accompanied by the Archangel Raphael. Raphael guides the boy to catch a fish, the innards of which miraculously restore the sight the boy's previously blind father (Tobit).
The artist tells the story here in a multiple narrative style. Through an opening on the right Tobias and the Archangel Raphael are shown catching the fish. In the foreground centre, Tobias annoints his father's eyes, restoring his sight. In the left background Tobit's wife, Sarah, is shown returning home with her retinue. On the right hand side a servant prepares a celebratory banquet.Provenance
