Cigarette case c. 1912
Silver-gilt, gold, guilloché enamel, rhodonite, garnet | 1.6 x 9.1 x 5.5 cm (whole object) | RCIN 4061
-
Cigarette case, rectangular with rounded sides, oyster guilloché enamel with polished rhodonite ends and borders of chased gold leaves, the gold thumbpiece is set with a faceted garnet.
The style and quality of this box suggest that it was made in Fabergé's workshops, but it is unmarked. Several other firms produced good-quality cigarette cases in guilloché enamel and gold. Those who supplied the imperial family included Hahn, Köchli, Britsin and Bolin. It was a gift to Queen Mary from Grand Duchess Xenia of Russia for Christmas 1912.
Silver mark of 88 zolotniks (1908-17); engraved Xenia 1912
