After Jacopo Tintoretto (1519-94)
Saint Roch Ministering to Sufferers from the Plague c.1580-1680
-
Within a hospital interior Saint Roch can be seen helping a naked man onto a bed. Sick people gather to each side, looking to and imploring the saint for help. On the right stands a woman carrying a large dish; there is a row of windows above her. This is a competent but somewhat simplified copy of a large canvas by Tintoretto in the choir of the church of San Rocco, the date of which is disputed (1549 or 1559). The copy is slightly cut at both ends. It is painted on coarse canvas and probably dates from the seventeenth century.
