The Duke, Queen Victoria’s seventh child, is dressed as Colonel of the Scots Guards with the badge of the Prussian Order ‘Pour La Mérite’. His ribbons include the Egypt medal 1882-9, the Order of Medjidjie, 2nd class (Turkey), and the Khedive’s Egyptian Star 1884-6. Queen Victoria had written to the Duke who was in India, in September 1888, that Swoboda was ‘going out again & I wish you wd sit to him’. The Duke replied from Poona asking when to expect Swoboda ‘so I can arrange to sit for him as you wish’.
