Probably painted just before the King's accession on 27 March 1625, this picture shows the Prince of Wales wearing a black outfit composed of tightly fitting doublet with full breeches terminating just above the knee. The ribbon points which can be seen around the waistline would have originally been used to attach the doublet to the breeches, but by this date were purely decorative. Around his neck is a wide layered ruff of linen with a deep edge of fine lace and matching cuffs, while over his black hose are decorative ribbon garters which match the bows on his shoes. To his left is a table upon which rests a black hat and the sitter carries a sword and holds a cane. He also wears the Garter and lesser George on the riband of the Order. Jacob van Doort was a Dutch artist, originally from Hamburg who arrived in London in 1624. He worked in both miniature and large scale, and also produced portraits for the court in Denmark and Sweden. He is thought to have been the brother of Abraham van der Doort who served as Surveyer of the King's Pictures between 1625 and 1640.
