Full-length portrait of Henry VIII (1491-1547), standing, facing the viewer, holding his gloves in his right hand and the chain from which his dagger hangs in his left. He is wearing a richly embroidered and jewelled doublet with a fur-lined cloak and feathered hat.
This is a derivation of the famous portrait of Henry VIII painted by Holbein for the Whitehall Mural (see RCIN 405750)
The painting appears in Pyne's illustrated 'Royal Residences' of 1819, hanging in The Queen's Gallery at Kensington Palace (RCIN 922155).
Provenance
First recorded in the collection of Charles I in the Cross Gallery at Somerset House (no 326), when sold to Colonel Webb 29 October 1649 for £30; recovered at the Restoration and back in the Cross Gallery at Somerset House in 1710 (no 25)
