Richard Jack (1866-1952)
The Blue Drawing Room, Buckingham Palace Signed and dated 1927
-
This interior was painted a year after Jack had completed his painting of ‘The Chinese Chippendale Room at Buckingham Palace’ (RCIN 405848). It depicts the Blue Drawing Room, looking towards the Music Room, with a set of carved and gilded settees and chairs, a Lépine clock on the mantelpiece, and the State portraits of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra by Sir Samuel Luke Fildes on either side (RCINs 404553-4). It recalls the grand interiors painted by Sir John Lavery (1856-1941) earlier in the century. For example: ‘The Van Dyck Room, Wilton’, 1920 (Royal Academy of Arts) and ‘The Royal Family at Buckingham Palace’, 1913 (National Portrait Gallery) of which there is a study in the Royal Collection (RCIN 407134).
