A white and brown Pyrenean dog, standing, facing the left in a frozen mountainous landscape.
Gabbas, a Pyrenean Mountain dog, was given to Queen Victoria by King Louis-Philippe of France in December 1844. He was very aggressive and bit the Queen badly in the arm. As a result he was given to the Zoological Society.
Signed and dated: T M Joy / 1845. Inscribed on the back with the names of artist and sitter and the date, 1845.Provenance
Painted for Queen Victoria; recorded hanging in the Kennels at Windsor Castle in 1878
