Self-taught Canadian artist Stuart McCormick was born in Glengarry, Ontario in 1905/6. He worked as an artist and commerical illustrator and and was at one time employed by Sampson Matthews as an advertising illustrator.
He principally practiced as a landscape painter and was loosely associated with the Group of Seven, who initiated the first major Canadian national art movement with paintings inspired by the Canadian landscape. Like other Group members, McCormick was inspired by the rugged natural scenery of the Ontario landscape, his paintings were characterised by the use of broad brush strokes and a liberal application of paint similar to that employed by other Group of Seven artists A.Y. Jackson, Frederick Varley, Arthur Lismer and Tom Thomson.
