The Holy Family with Angels c.1530-50
-
The Virgin Mary is depicted nursing the Christ Child, who has fallen asleep. Jospeh stands to the left of them. On the table in front of the Holy Family is a metal dish conatining grapes and other fruit. The overall theme of the painting may be that of music, as evidenced by the three singing angels on the right. The angel furthest to the right holds a volume of music in which the staves are of five lines and the notes seem to be arranged arbitrarily in ascending and descending scales. In the ninetennth century this painting was attributed to Quinten Massys, but it is now thought to be by a follower of Joos Van Cleve.
Provenance
One of the group of early Flemish works from the 77 paintings belonging to Prince Ludwig von Oettingen-Wallerstein (1791-1870), which were first offered to Prince Albert in 1847 as security for a loan and came into his possession by default (no 71 in Waagen’s catalogue of 1854); 25 of them were accepted by the National Gallery in 1863
