Portrait of a Dominican friar c.1575-80

The sitter in this portrait can be identified as a Dominican friar by his outfit of a black friar’s mantle over a white habit. He is shown at half-length, facing half to the left, with his eyes to the front. His beard and moustache are turning to grey and his hair is receding, suggesting that he is middle aged; the former identification of the sitter as the unorthodox Dominican Tommaso Campanella can have no substance since he was only twenty-six when Tintoretto died. The quality of the painting is generally convincing, but the handling in places is less than perfectly assured, making it difficult to determine whether this is a later personal work by Tintoretto or from his workshop. The painting was engraved for the Reynst ‘Prentenwerk’, in reverse, and the print attributed to Cornelius van Dalen.
