Edward VI (1537-53) c.1550
Oil on panel | 167.0 x 90.5 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 405751
-
Full-length portrait of Edward VI (1537-53), standing within a marble interior, facing slightly to the left; wearing black costume embroidered with gold and jewelled hat; his right hand holds gloves, his left holds the end of his belt at his waist. This is a good version of arguably the most important official portrait of Edward VI which was painted by the Flemish artist William Scrots. The original portrait type, from which this derives, probably originated in 1550 during the marriage negotiations between Edward VI and the eldest daughter of Henri II of France. It became a popular image, and many versions exist.
