After Jacopo Tintoretto (1519-94)
Saint George, the Princess and Saint Louis of Toulouse 1600-99
-
The Princess, seated in the left foreground upon the dead dragon, twists her body around to look up to St George, who is standing behind her with his hands upraised and his white horse in the background. Saint Louis stands on the right looking down at the dragon, in episcopal robes, with a mitre and crozier.
This is a good copy of the canvas by Tintoretto painted for the Salt Office in Palazzo Camerlenghi, Venice, c. 1552. The colours are the same and the very minor differences in design would arise naturally from the exigencies of free-hand copying, however the circular top of the original has been extended to a taller rectangle. The copy is in a style very distinct from Tintoretto’s and is likely to have been made in the seventeenth century.Provenance
First recorded as being moved from the Presence Chamber of the Lower Apartments at Kensington Palace in 1805; it is still in the Presence Chamber at Kensington in 1818 (no 42)
