At the right are massive Roman ruins, mostly overgrown with trees. Up against the ruins is a peasant's house within the trees, and a shepherd and a cowherd with their animals can be seen in the right foreground. At the extreme left are heavily foliated trees and in the distance at the centre of the picture are high mountain peaks. The painting's creator is unknown, however it seems likely to be an Italian picture of the seventeenth century, and may have been painted in Naples or Rome.
