In this intense religious scene, the body of Christ is lowered from the cross. An old man in red (probably Joseph of Arimathea) stands on a ladder and supports the body of Christ in a white winding sheet. The Virgin Mary, in a white veil and blue mantle and with a halo of gilded rays, embraces Christ. The cross in the background carries a plaque inscribed I.N.R.I (Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum). This is one of many versions of this scene, the original of which was probably by Rogier van der Weyden and is now lost.
Provenance
One of the group of early Flemish works from the 77 paintings belonging to Prince Ludwig von Oettingen-Wallerstein (1791-1870), which were first offered to Prince Albert in 1847 as security for a loan and came into his possession by default (no 36 in Waagen’s catalogue of 1854); 25 of them were accepted by the National Gallery in 1863
