Alessandro Salucci (Florence 1590- Rome c. 1660)
A Ruin c.1620-60
-
A group of harbour scenes have been attributed to the collaboration of Salucci for the architecture and Miel for the figures (see for example CWLF 44, 404916); the only dated example (Art Museum, Cincinnati) bears the date 1656. This is similar in technique but different in imagery being the most sublime and threatening ruin, peopled by cowed figures, with no modern building to offer them shelter; the effect anticipates Piranesi by a century.
Provenance
Probably the 'Ruins and Figures' by Bamboccio recorded in the Queen's Dressing Room at Kensington Palace in 1778 and 1790; certainly in the Cube Room at Kensington in 1818 (no 401), attributed to Viviano Codazzi and Jan Miel.
