Oil on panel | 110.0 x 133.9 x 5.5 cm (frame, external) | RCIN 405718

This triptych shows the scene of lamentation after Christ has been taken down from the cross. In the centre Christ is supported by Joseph of Arimathea, surrounded by St John the Evangelist, the Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalen. Joseph of Arimathea appears again in the left wing of the triptych, accompanied by Nicodemus. The right wing has another representation of Mary Magdalen (holding a covered pot) standing next to an unidentified female saint. The reverses of the wings have representations in grisaille of St John the Baptist and St Barbara respectively.
The appearance of Joseph of Arimathea and Mary Magdalen twice in the scenes of this altarpiece may indicate that the original owner had a personal dedication to these saints.
The artist is unknown. At least three distinct hands appear to have been involved in painting the figures and the continuous landscape background. It is closest in style to the work of the 'Antwerp mannerists'.Provenance
One of the group of early Flemish works from the 77 paintings belonging to Prince Ludwig von Oettingen-Wallerstein (1791-1870), which were first offered to Prince Albert in 1847 as security for a loan and came into his possession by default (no 70 in Waagen’s catalogue of 1854); 25 of them were accepted by the National Gallery in 1863
