The Battle of Culloden c.1746-8
Oil on canvas | 123.2 x 205.2 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 405708

This may be the view of the battle mentioned at Cumberland Lodge in 1768, in which case it was probably commissioned by the Duke of Cumberland himself. Through a thick layer of discoloured and dirty varnish it is possible to discern the lay out of the battle at the moment when the Highlanders attacked the Duke of Cumberland's forces. An extensive view across a plain from the highground; on the left is King George II's army, drawn up in position; on the right the rebel army advances, urged on by a figure on horseback in the foreground, possibly the Duke of Perth. This work has been attributed to the Duke's military draughtsman, Thomas Sandby, but it is not currently in a condition to tell.
Provenance
Possibly commissioned by William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland; recorded in General Taylor's Room at Buckingham Palace in 1819 (no 863)
