Portrait of a Woman c.1575
Oil on panel | 77.9 x 57.4 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 405701
-
This portrait was bought by Queen Victoria as a portrait of Mary I. The later suggestion that it represents Margaret, Countess of Lennox seems equally unlikely. The sitter is reprented wearing a black gown, with a white linen ruff, holding her gloves in her right hand and a red rose in her left. At her waist hangs a cameo in a rich jewelled setting and round her wrists are bracelets decorated with an armillary sphere.
Provenance
Purchased by Queen Victoria in 1843 from the 3rd Earl of Bessborough and stated to have been placed in Prince Albert's apartments at Buckingham Palace
