Domenico Fetti (Rome c. 1588-Venice 1623)
An Old Male Saint c.1613-22
-
This is one of a number of pictures of saints by Fetti in similar format, possibly from more than one series. Here the male saint looks to the right, and holds a tall stem of white lillies in his left hand. He is dressed in a brown mantle, with a grey beard and a halo around his head. The type of head, combined with the lily stem, indicates that the saint is most probably St Joseph. The painting would seem to belong stylistically with Fetti's 'Young Male Saint' (RCIN 405494).
Provenance
Presumably acquired by Charles I; recorded by Van der Doort in the Long Gallery at Whitehall in 1639 (no 46); sold from Somerset House as a set of six for £36 to Emanuel de Critz and others on 23 October 1651 (no 48); recovered at the Restoration and listed in the Long Matted Gallery at Whitehall in 1666 (no 33)
