Probably a studio copy, with slight variations, of RCIN 405641.
Anne Hyde, Duchess of York (1637-71) sat for Lely on several occasions; Pepys records seeing in Lely's studio in 1662 ‘the Duchesse of Yorke her whole body, sitting in state in a chair, in white Sattin'. Here the Duchess is shown in a copper-coloured gown, with her right hand fingering her flowing tresses of hair. A brown scarf is pinned around the neckline of her gown which is also decorated with pearls and jewelled clasps.Provenance
Probably first recorded in store at Kensington Palace in 1710 (no 26); on the King's Pictured Staircase at Kensington in 1732; in the Queen's Dressing Room, also called Blue or Blue Velvet Room, at Buckingham Palace in 1790 and 1819 (no 668), it appears here as an overdoor in Pyne's illustrated Royal Residences of 1819 (RCIN 922144); at St James's Palace in 1864 hanging alongside RCIN 403224 (nos 33-4).
