This is a copy of Taddeo Zuccaro’s ‘Adoration of the Shepherds’, a composition known through the engraving by the Flemish artist, Cornelis Cort, dated 1567. There are other versions of the composition, though this one is especially fine and probably also by a Flemish hand. All known versions of the composition are in this same direction, so there is no way of telling which artists have copied Cort’s engraving and which Zuccaro’s original drawing.
The painting appears in Pyne's illustrated 'Royal Residences' of 1819, hanging in The Queen's Closet at Kensington Palace (RCIN 922154).Provenance
Acquired by Charles II in 1660 from William Frizell at Breda (List I no 18); recorded in the King's Closet at Whitehall in 1666 (no 339)
